Autumn is my favorite (but ask me again in Spring;) and I love the juxtaposition of fresh and faded that the garden gives us during this transitional time of year; fresh dahlias, sedum or late coneflowers and cheerful sunflowers or chrysanthemum mingle happily with faded Russian sage and the darkening pink of Summer's creamy white hydrangeas. Two seasons merging seamlessly and beautifully before the final curtain call. As the birds and wildlife gather the Fall fruits, seeds and berries, I too am called to gather and harvest the fleeting flowers, foliage and fruits of the season. I assemble armloads of seasonal bounty and take a mental picture (along with many actual pictures!) to sustain me through the long winter ahead.
Some of the lovely flowers and foliage we're currently enjoying include: Ninebark, Beautyberry, Spirea, Northern Sea Oats, Heirloom Chrysanthemum, Sedum, Hydrangeas, Russian Sage, Snowberry, an occasional Dahlia, Crabapple and other fruiting branches and foliage.
